loft diesel I + II (2009)

Friend and fellow artist Joe McCarthy lived in a downtown Plattsburgh apartment. This was a row-house style apartment in which Joe – and a couple roommates - lived all the way up the stair on the third and most upper floor. Although this apartment was located architecturally at the top of the structure there was a large “extra” room built on top of the roof of the building, essentially forming a stand-alone fourth floor. We referred to this special, oversized widow’s watch of a room – complete with a comfortable staircase leading up to it, south-facing windows, and a crawl-through roof-access portal – “The Loft”. The Loft naturally lent itself to gatherings and was home to many during the one-year period Joe resided at this apartment. One day Joe said something along the lines of: “Hey, we should do an art show in The Loft”. Word got out around the Art Department of Plattsburgh State University to drop off artwork at the loft no later than the day before the exhibition. The event was so successful a second exhibition was held a month later. Joe moved out of the apartment not long after.
